Best Shampoo and Conditioner Pairs for Curly Hair

These pairs are listed from lightest to most conditioning. All the shampoos are sulfate-free, so they won’t leave your hair feeling stripped.

Odele Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner

This is a drugstore pair I can see working for everyone. The shampoo uses sodium C14 olefin sulfonate, one of my favorite gentle surfactants. It has no oils or butters. The conditioner detangles well and has nice slip without being too heavy.

Don’t count on a shampoo to give you volume. “Volumizing” on the label often tells you it’s a thorough cleanse.

Your shampoo’s only job is to get your hair clean.

  • It should remove product residue, buildup, oil, and sweat.
  • It isn’t there to condition your hair.
  • Starting with a ton of moisture compounds through your routine and can affect your hold.
  • Hair that feels very clean right after shampooing is a good thing. Your conditioner comes next.
  • Milky or creamy shampoos usually contain conditioning agents. If your hair gets weighed down easily, avoid them.

Maui Moisture Lightweight Hydration + Hibiscus Water Shampoo and Conditioner

This pair is an all-time favorite among most of my Curl Coaching clients. It’s affordable and has a very simple ingredient list. There are virtually no oils or butters, even in the conditioner. My husband has pin-straight, very fine hair, and he gets great results with it too.

It’s very similar to the Odele pair. The main difference is that the Odele has added protein.

AG Hair Balance Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo and Boost Conditioner

This is a higher-end favorite of mine. I buy the liter refill pouches. The shampoo gives a strong, thorough cleanse without stripping your hair. The conditioner adds lightweight moisture with some protein.

The brand says the apple cider vinegar helps balance the scalp. That may help if your scalp is very oily or dry. It’s low on the ingredient list, so don’t count on it to remove buildup. You’ll still want a separate clarifying shampoo for hard water.

AG Balance Apple Cider Vinegar Sulfate-Free Shampoo

  • Cleansing: High
  • Conditioning: Low
  • Protein: Low

Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly Wash Shampoo and De-Frizz Conditioner

This is a drugstore favorite that’s also available in the UK and Europe. It’s cruelty-free and vegan. The shampoo is milky white, which tells you some conditioning agents are present. It still cleanses thoroughly. If your hair is extra sensitive to conditioning, choose one of the lighter pairs above.

TIP: Rinse your conditioner thoroughly.

  • Conditioner is meant to leave conditioning agents behind on your hair.
  • As the conditioning level climbs, use a small amount.
  • Rinse it out well so you start styling with a clean base.

Tootilab Gentle Shampoo and Detangling Conditioner

Tootilab is available all over the world, and the brand focuses on functional ingredients. The shampoo is slightly milky but still cleanses really well. Clients across all hair types get results with this pair.

The conditioner is thicker and more conditioning, partly from coconut seed butter lower on the list. It has amazing slip, which makes detangling really easy. If you weigh down easily, use a tiny amount or choose something lighter.

Shampoos Compared

Every product is rated None, Low, Medium, or High. A product that falls between two levels gets an in-between rating. Ratings compare each product to everything I’ve tested, not just its own category. A Low–Medium conditioner is lightweight compared to all products that contain conditioning agents, not just lightweight for a conditioner.

Best Clarifying Shampoos for Curly Hair

Here’s what to know about choosing a clarifying shampoo:

  • Look for one that removes hard water minerals, no matter your water type. On my shop page use the “chelating” tag to filter.
  • You don’t need to know whether your water is hard or soft.
  • Look for chelating ingredients like “Disodium EDTA.” Chelating shampoos remove hard water minerals plus buildup from products, oil, and sweat.
  • Not all clarifying shampoos remove hard water. Every pick below does.
  • These are color safe, however avoid clarifying on your first wash right after coloring appointments. Give it some time.

Odele Clarifying Shampoo

  • Cleansing: High
  • Conditioning: Low
  • Protein: Medium
  • Color Safe: Yes
  • Unique Benefits: Removes product and hard water buildup; removes chlorine

This is another solid drugstore option from Odele. It works for all hair types.

Odele Clarifying Shampoo

Kristin Ess Deep Clean Clarifying Shampoo

This is a very strong drugstore option that contains sulfate. I use it about once every other month, or when I need a reset from heavy buildup, silicones, or conditioning products. I also use it before bond-building treatments so they penetrate well. It still isn’t too stripping. It’s best for very fine hair, frequent buildup, or hard water.

Still dry after conditioning? If your hair feels dry after you clarify, condition, and rinse, your clarifying shampoo may have been too strong. Your conditioner may also not have done enough.

  • Cleansing: High
  • Conditioning: Low
  • Protein: Low
  • Color Safe: Yes
  • Unique Benefits: Removes product and hard water buildup

Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Shampoo

This one is designed specifically for hard water minerals, and it removes all other buildup too. It’s color-safe even though it’s very strong. If you have very hard water at home, this is the one I’d choose. Don’t rely on apple cider vinegar to remove hard water.

  • Cleansing: High
  • Conditioning: Low
  • Protein: Low
  • Color Safe: Yes
  • Unique Benefits: Removes product and hard water buildup

Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Shampoo

Ouidad Water Works Clarifying Shampoo

This is an all-time favorite of mine and of almost all my clients. It contains sulfate but feels gentler than the Kristin Ess. That may be because of its conditioning ingredients. It still isn’t heavy.

  • Cleansing: High
  • Conditioning: Low
  • Protein: None
  • Color Safe: Yes
  • Benefits: Removes product and hard water buildup; removes chlorine

Curlsmith Curl Reset Detox Shampoo

This is one of the more conditioning clarifying shampoos, so it leaves hair soft. If you weigh down easily, choose a less conditioning option. Its fine micro scrub exfoliates the scalp and lifts buildup, and it rinses out easily. It’s a great choice if you get scalp flakes or scalp buildup.

  • Cleansing: Medium–High
  • Conditioning: Low–Medium
  • Protein: None
  • Color Safe: Yes
  • Unique Benefits: Removes product and hard water buildup; exfoliating to the scalp

Curlsmith Curl Reset Detox Shampoo

Use a scalp brush with any shampoo.

  • Even a thorough cleanse leaves some product residue behind.
  • A shampoo massager or scalp brush helps lift it.
  • I usually shampoo twice, especially with a milder shampoo.

How to Choose the Right Shampoo and Conditioner

My most frequent question is which shampoo and conditioner I recommend for a certain curl pattern, like 3A. Your curl pattern doesn’t matter here. What’s actually useful is your hair’s finish.

  • Soft finish: Your hair is naturally soft and gets weighed down easily. You may struggle with hold. Choose a strong shampoo with few conditioning agents and a very lightweight conditioner, like the Maui Moisture or Odele pairs.
  • Rough finish: You may have a tighter curl pattern or damage. Your hair holds its shape easily and feels rough. It can tolerate more conditioning, so the later picks on this list will work for you.

Signs your shampoo and conditioner are working:

  • Your scalp and hair get clean.
  • You can detangle, and your hair doesn’t feel stripped after rinsing.
  • You get a cast when your hair dries, and your curls last.

Signs it’s time to reassess:

  • You’re not getting hold, or you can never get a cast.
  • Your scalp isn’t getting clean.
  • Your hair feels very weighed down.
  • Your curls don’t last past Day 1.

If this sounds familiar, your products are probably full of oils and butters. That’s especially common with shampoos and conditioners labeled for curly hair or made by popular curly hair brands.

All of these picks share the same criteria. Choose based on what’s available to you and your price point. You don’t need a product for every little problem.

What to Look For and What to Avoid

✅ What to look for:

  • Strong cleanse
  • High lather
  • Sulfate-free (regular shampoo)
  • Chelating or hard water removal (clarifying shampoo)
  • Light to medium-weight conditioner

❌ What to avoid:

  • Shampoos that are too mild, like co-washes
  • Shampoos and conditioners loaded with conditioning ingredients
  • Heavy conditioners
  • Heavy oils and butters high on the ingredient list

This is my Moisture-Hold Balance Framework in action. Conditioning builds across your routine. If your hair has too much conditioning and isn’t clean enough, your gel can’t give you long-lasting hold. The shampoo and conditioner steps are often overlooked, but they matter.
